Progreso Early College

Graduating more students with Associate's Degrees than any other Early College in the RGV!

About Us
  • Progreso Early College
Progreso Early College began in 2007 and has now graduated 7 cohorts of students, all of whom either graduated with an Associate's Degree from South Texas College (STC) OR with substantial college credit hours from STC.
General Information and Programs Offered

South Texas College supports 15 Early College High Schools.  Each ECHS is an autonomous public high school designed to create a seamless transition between high school and college.  By design, ECHSs are small, innovative high schools that allow students least likely to attend college, an opportunity to earn a high school diploma and two years of college credit. More importantly, the transition from high school to college is eased by blending high school and college curriculum into a cohesive unit.  Over 3,000 students are participating in Early College High Schools. Progreso  Early College is one such ECHS under the STC umbrella.

Dual Enrollment Academies

Since 2005, South Texas College has been offering a unique opportunity for high achieving high school juniors to earn an associate degree from STC while they complete their high school graduation requirements. The Academies are two-year dual enrollment programs for high school juniors who are interested in earning an associate degree at South Texas College during their junior and senior year at high school. Since 2005 ten Academy students have received the Bill & Melinda Gates Millennium Scholarship.

The first Dual Enrollment Academy in Medical Science (DEMSA) was established in 2005 followed by Engineering Academy (DEEA) in 2006. The Computer Science Academy (DECSA) was created in 2010. In Fall 2012 South Texas College will launch two new academies one in Criminal Justice (DECJA) and one in the work force area called School to Career Academy (SCADE) in the Welding field.

What is the Dual Enrollment Academy Program?

Academies are two-year dual enrollment programs for high school juniors interested in earning an associate degree by the end of their senior year in high school. Academy program structure is designed to allow students to take high school courses in the morning and dual credit college courses in the afternoon at South Texas College.
